Studio Shoot Plan for 3rd of October 2012

Evaluation of where I'm at now and what I have done:  I feel I have experimented with quite alot of new things throughout this project and the last project, Freeform, but that I still wish to continue with the ideas and perfect them and also experiment with different ideas too.  Perhaps moving on from the glamourous shots to perhaps colourful ones in the future.

Where I want to go next: I want to try different angles, new lighting and also use the same lighting which I have found I really enjoy using, and also continuing the advertisement idea.  I also want to experiment with using the white background a bit more, just to experiment with how the images look with different backgrounds.  I do really love using the black background though.

Studio Shoot - 27th September 2012

                                                                Studio Shoot:

                             Lighting I experimented with:

A light beside the model and a light above the model to create a key light in the model's eye.

Second example of first use of lighting but different angle.

Use of large diffuser beside model which created a very pale effect which I loved and will want to continue to experiment with.

Experimentation with spotlight behind the model to create a mysterious effect on the model.

Use of spotlight direct on model's face and diffuser next to model to soften the harsh spotlight.

                                          My Favourites:

I absolutely love this photograph. I feel that this version works so much better than the previous image I did for Freeform because of the added jewellery. The form of the model's jaw which is highlighted by the studio lighting creates a line which leads up to the model's cheek, which then blends in to the background.  The model's hand adds texture to the photograph and creates a sense of feeling within the image.  The model's expression looks vacant and dreamy almost like she is waiting for something.

I love the key light in the model's eye.  The mask adds deep contrast to the photograph along with the background.  It also creates a contrast between the model's pale eyes.  I would have preferred now looking back at this image to have tied her hair up or pulled it to the side as it looks slightly messy and not tamed enough for the glamourous mask.

I love this image.  The contrast is really strong and defines the model.  The lighting highlights the model and creates depth to the texture of the model's dress.  I decided to leave no light on the right hand side as I love just having one side of the model lit up as I feel it leaves the model as mysterious.

This was an image where I was trying to create an almost advertisement 'look' to the image.  I used a spotlight directly on the jewellery which made the model look as though she were coming out of the shadows.  I feel the experimentation went quite well as I used just one light for this effect.  The lighting highlights the jewellery but still shows enough of the model.  I'm quite pleased with the outcome and wish to continue with this idea for the next shoot.

This is the effect that the large, white diffuser gave setup next to my model.  I absolutely love the soft look it gives to my model and the way it highlights my model's eyes.  The contrast is great as it goes from quite a light grey to the darker tones within the background which also blends the hair slowly into the backdrop.

Evaluation:

I feel that this shoot has developed from the first studio shoot I did with my model in the Freeform project.  I feel my model is slowly starting to relax with the camera and I'm starting to really get some beautiful portraits.  I experimented with using one large difuser, using a spotlight directly on my model and also aiming the spotlight more on the jewelerry to highlight the jewelerry and create a sort of jewelerry advertisement.  My model has recently dyed her hair brown from blonde which I feel adds depth to the photographs.  From this photoshoot I want to continue again with the theme of glamour but try to experiment with different angles, composition, lighting and backdrops.  I want to continue experimenting with spotlight directly on my model, but perhaps using a white background.

Studio Shoot Plan

I'm not quite sure how I have found this idea of photographing jewellery. I started taking some portraits in my previous shoot of my model with just an earring and a ring on and felt that as an idea it really worked along with the low key lighting. Originally I was shooting with the intentions of adding some jewellery to add glamour to the images. Then I realised the images just as portraits really worked and felt really happy with them overall. I was going to expand and leave the shoot as it is and go on to a different idea, but I feel that with the time constraints I will continue with portraits with glamourous jewellery within them for this project. I feel this is still relating to fashion as jewellery has a key role in the industry.
Where Next:
I'm going to continue with taking portraits of my model with glamourous jewellery on, which I started in my Freeform project. I want to experiment with more low key lighting and getting a key light in my model's eye again which looks aesthetically beautiful. I also want to experiment with spotlight again but using a black background, which I only experimented with for a couple of photographs as I felt it wasn't working but then realised after that in black and white it really worked.

This image inspires me because of how the lighting highlights the jewellery.  The lighting has been used to draw you into the beauty of the model and thus your eye moves to the right where the model has a ring on and then the lines of her hand create and draw you into the form of her neck which directs you to the necklace.

This is a beautiful low key shot which inspires me because of the soft lighting and black background.  The lighting highlights the model's hair and texture of the model's dress.  The lighting also subtly highlights the model's chest and leg area.

This image inspires me because of the powerful flash lighting which highlights the model's eyes and texture of her clothes.  The lighting compliments the model without the lighting being too much.  The powerful form of the model is highlighed and this is why this image inspires me.  I want to continue and perhaps try this high key lighting with white background on my model.

This image inspires me because of the simple studio lighting yet the beauty of the actress really makes this photograph.

Where I'm at Now

I feel that after the initial first shoot not going the way I envisioned that after Freeform needing to be handed in and feeling that I haden't experimented with everything I wanted to in the studio with Jem, that I would continue these ideas througout this project also.  Such as the glamourous portraits and use of spotlighting.  I also want to experiment with cinematic shots and composition.

First Vintage Shoot

Evaluation:
I feel that this shoot didn't go anywhere near the vision and images I had in my head.  I was hoping for a sunny day and golden light but instead it was drizzly and dull.  The flash, I felt, was making the images worse because it highlighted how bad the lighting actually was.  The only images I like out of this shoot is the compositional hand and the model putting on lipstick in the car mirror.

Shoot Plan for First Vintage Shoot

Vintage

Equipment I'll need:

  • Film Camera
  • 35mm rolls of film
  • Digital camera
  • Props
  • Dresses
  • Shoes
  • Make-up
Shot Types:
  • Close-up of model running her fingers through grass
  • Close-up of model putting on lipstick in car mirror
  • Medium shot of model sitting side on with car door open - also with model putting on lipstick with mirror
  • Close-up and long shot of model running her hand through grass with back turned and looking over her shoulder

My Aim:  I really want to experiment more with outdoor light and the use of vintage and antique items in the photographs to create a sense of vintage within the photographs rather than the vintage processes used in photography to give a classic 'look' to images.
